October, 2010 – I was sitting in the adult Sunday School class listening to the teacher. He mentioned something about the National Day of Prayer. I don’t remember the details, but it started a string of ideas in my head. “We have a National Day of Prayer, but America needs a National day of fasting.” Thus, The Great American Fast was born.
On January 1, 2011, the official TGAF website made its appearance on the web. The Fast was scheduled for Sunday, July 3, a short 6-hour fast from 12:00-6:00 pm. Other churches stopped by Lifegate to join in the Fast. That first year, we were treated to preaching by Evangelist Michael Adams (now Pastor Michael Adams), Missionary to Kiribati Sam Snyder, and Pastor Ken Codner from Grace Baptist Church. It was a great Sunday!
Through the next year, the Fast had grown to include members from 28 states, and strangely, 17 countries. Sadly but thankfully, foreign nations seemed to have more desire to pray for America than we Americans.
Over the years, we have seen people come and go, but the Fast remains strong. The Great American Fast website has morphed into kneesforthenations.org , and the Fast has lengthened to a 24-hour fast. The principal meeting place is the Lamar Lighthouse Camp in Lamar, PA, and this year we will begin on Friday, September 9th at 6:00 pm and continue through Saturday, September 10th at 6 pm.
Free housing is available for the weekend and there will be a free break fast meal at 6:00 pm Saturday night. We’d love to have you come and join us. If you can’t make it to Lamar, PA, please take the time and join us in prayer during the weekend, and let’s lift our voices to the Lord for America from America and around the world.
